Our Mission

Macha Theatre Works is a fearless feminist non-profit arts organization showcasing exceptional artists, delivering innovative education programs, and staging new theatrical works that feature strong female characters.

Our Vision

Macha Theatre Works envisions a world where fearless feminist voices thrive.

Our work

We strive to bring complex, provocative, empowering, innovative, eclectic, and diverse stories from under represented groups, especially women, to the stage through professional productions, new play reading series, and educational offerings. And when we say women we mean all women. We seek stories that empower and promote women of color, trans women, femmes, queer women, and women of all ages and abilities.

Our History

Co-founded in 2001 by Kristina Sutherland Rowell and Desiree Prewitt, the company's original name, Macha Monkey Productions, was chosen in memoriam to a dear friend whose adopted wild spider monkey provided excellent storytelling fodder and inspired our founders.

Our Future

In 2017, the company entered a time of transition and growth under Artistic Director Amy Poisson, with the Celtic Warrior Goddess Macha as the divine champion of Macha Theatre Works. When the global coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of in-person theater, we bravely stepped “Into the Unknown” for our 20th season, producing online streaming theater and fearlessly championing women’s voices in a digital space.

IN SOLIDARITY, WE STAND.

We acknowledge the profound effect recent shootings have had on our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander artists, friends, and neighbors. We also acknowledge the historically pervasive bigotry that has allowed the micro-aggressions and outright violence to continue. We are committed to fostering an open, inclusive, and welcoming community for all, and we will not tolerate any expressions of hate, bias, or discrimination.

WE WILL NOT BE SILENT OR COMPLACENT.

Report hate incidents against Asian Americans, and join Macha in donating to their cause.

Sign up locally for bystander intervention training.

Educate yourself and others on the history of Asian Americans and their identity, contributions, and challenges.
